Website planning

What should you prepare for a company website?.

You don’t need every document ready to start talking. Knowing the website’s purpose and what content is available helps everyone estimate and decide on the same basis.

01

Start with the action you want visitors to take

Write down one main goal, such as requesting a quote, reviewing a service or choosing a product. Identify who visits and what they need to know first. This guides page order and button priority.

For example, a quote-based business may need to show services, relevant work and how to describe a project before asking for contact details.

02

Gather the information customers really ask for

Prepare service descriptions, inclusions, exclusions, steps, timing considerations and handover questions. Use the language you use with customers; it can be edited for the website later.

Back up company claims with examples: how enquiries are handled, who is responsible and what support covers. Unsupported words like “best” tell readers little.

03

Organise images and usage rights

Separate logos, business images, product photos and work samples. Note what can be published and who approves it. Flag missing imagery for photography or sourcing estimates.

04

Separate essentials from what can wait

List launch essentials, such as forms, products or two languages, separately from later additions. Phasing makes budgeting and acceptance clearer than including everything at once.

05

Prepare a budget, timing and decision maker

State your budget range, preferred launch date and why that date matters. Choose a main contact and approver, and allow time for content, feedback and testing.

A checklist to keep

  • Website goals and target audience
  • Services and frequently asked questions
  • Publishable logos, images and work
  • Essential features and integrations
  • Budget range, launch date and approver
